Allen Cooper made a welcome return to the Pickup Truck Racing Championship winners’ circle after pulling off a sublime last-lap overtake in race two at Donington Park.

In what proved to be a captivating cat-and-mouse contest at the front of the field, Cooper picked his moment and snatched the lead from Aaron Thompson with just a handful of corners remaining, before then going on to triumph.

Thompson started the contest from pole position and endured a feisty opening lap as he first had to hold off reigning champion Ryan Hadfield, before then keeping his nose ahead of title rival Cooper as they plunged into the Old Hairpin.

Hadfield would lose momentum exiting Redgate as he was forced to bounce across the gravel trap. At the same corner, albeit further back, James Goldstraw and Melvin Collins came to the blows – which in-turn brought out the safety car.

On the restart, Thompson and Cooper worked in unison to break clear of the chasing pack and once they had built up a sizeable gap, the pair became embroiled in a captivating duel at the front of the field.

Cooper remained fixed to the rear bumper of Thompson until the final lap before slipping up the inside of the multiple race winner at the exit of McLeans. Defending his line down the back straight, Cooper held on through the final sequence of corners to secure a famous win ahead of Thompson.

Former champion Dale Gent was a distant third having come under later pressure from Mark Willis, while Hadfield recovered to take the chequered flag in fifth.

Chris Brockhurst enjoyed one of his strong showings of the season to-date as he clinched sixth place ahead of Tom Hutchins, Mark Chalmers, Simon Ward and Chris Land, who completed the top ten.

Sadly, joining Goldstraw and Collins on the list of drivers who failed to finish was Michael Smith and Jonathan Hadfield.
