Aaron Thompson continued his reign as the ‘King of Qualifying’ in the Pickup Truck Racing Championship after snaring pole position at Donington Park.
In what proved to be a fast and frantic session around the East Midlands circuit, Thompson bolstered his championship aspirations by producing a sublime set of laps to clinch pole position for races one and two.
Things weren’t exactly plain sailing for the Essex racer however as not long after setting the fastest time, his Lightening McQueen inspired machine encountered mechanical issues that forced him to pull over to the side of the track with roughly six minutes remaining.
Despite Thompson missing the closing stages, nobody was able to better his time however reigning champion Ryan Hadfield certainly got close as he moved to within three tenths of a second of the pole sitter late on.
Mark Willis was another drive to strike late on as he brought himself into the mix to secure third place, narrowly ahead of Thompson’s main title protagonists – points leader Allen Cooper and former champion Dale Gent.
Jonathan Hadfield was next up in sixth after leaving it late to set his best time. The Pembrey podium finisher ended up narrowly ahead of Tom Hutchin, Chris Brockhurst, Simon Ward and Michael Smith.
Completing the classification for qualifying was Mark Chalmers, Melvin Collins, Chris Land and James Goldstraw.
